The brief was to refurbish an existing industrial unit on Bristol’s harbourside and transform it into a large organic food establishment. White Design and the founders shared a vision of a more sustainable way of living, working and the way we eat, adopting a thoroughly sustainable approach to material and energy resources. The “reduce, reuse, recycle” mantra was applied at every stage of the process, reusing and recycling as much of the existing material as possible.
The old ‘V-Shed’ was stripped back to its original industrial shell and opened up to exploit natural light and ventilation. All materials were audited and accounted for before being reused within the new scheme or recycled for use in other local projects. A handcrafted French oak staircase dominates the central atrium, adding to the sense of space and drama in the building.
