Brislington’s Gone Batty!

Posted on October 26, 2011

On the 26th October White Design sponsored one of the activities at the Discover Brislington Brook project - "A Batty Afternoon and Evening Story Walk".

Have you ever wondered how old the oldest bat in England is? How many species of bat there are in the UK? How many thousands of insects a bat can eat in a single night? Children and parents came to find out all this and more at an exciting bat-themed fun day and walk in Brislington.

In the UK, we are lucky enough to have 17 species of breeding bats - almost a quarter of our mammal species! Bats need shelter, a good water supply and a constant supply of insects to survive, which is why the woods around Brislington Brook are an ideal location for them.

White Design's workshop - designing and building a "bat hotel" that could house up to 50 bats - was just part of a programme that included bat mask, puppet and lantern making, apple pressing, face painting and outdoor games.

White Design's Matthew Graves, who led the workshop, said:
“We are thrilled to be involved in Brislington’s "Gone Batty" event. We always aim to protect and enhance plant and animal life in our building and landscape design work, so this is a great opportunity to show how we practice what we preach."
