The workshops form part of a curriculum integration programme that BAM offer as part of their construction services during the construction period. The three schools receiving the workshops are Robert Blake Science College, Chilton Trinity Technology College and Elmwood School, a school for young people with complex and multiple learning needs.
Anna Summers and Louisa Philpott have designed a series of three workshops for each school, which will be run over the course of a year. In some cases the workshops will be run once the school has moved into its new building. This will enable White Design to utilize the new facilities and to demonstrate ways in which the new building and landscape can be used and added to by the staff and pupils in the future.
Working with each school, a preferred theme has been chosen. These topics include:
Landscape and the Food Cycle - with a focus on where food comes from around the world
The Great Debate - giving the pupils a chance to present arguments for and against subjects such as renewable energy, and carbon offsetting
Hungry City - a presentation about where food is produced and what we can do to reduce our carbon footprints, culminating in an inter-house competition designed by the students;
Plants for Future - a science garden design challenge.
Pupils at Elmwood School have just enjoyed their first workshop, creating a huge world map collage, which shows the food and culture of a number of countries. For the next stage the children will choose a fruit or vegetable representative of their chosen county to grow.
