The official opening ceremony for Castle Park Learning Plaza was held at Castle Park Primary School. White Design completed an extension to the school for Monmouthshire County Council to support a new style of educational learning. This Comprises of a learning plaza for 60 students, a flexible open plan design and a learning space that extends outside, all delivered in a building that scores an "A" grade for its energy use.

LILAC, a community-based Co-operative Society, now moves to the next step in its £3M plan to build 20 affordable eco-homes and a common house from straw and timber. The construction, occupation and disposal of buildings is a significant cause of environmental damage in the UK. White Design is committed to aiding and supporting clients in making a positive contribution to sustainability by jointly developing consultancy services and the design of low energy, low environmental impact buildings and landscapes that create a healthy and efficient working environment for their stakeholders and employees and minimise the life cycle costs of policies and facility ownership and occupation.

We will, where appropriate and agreed:

Work with our clients to produce environmentally sound project, building and landscape specifications that meet or exceed client requirements both in terms of environmental and social performance and cost, and have full regard to life cycle costs and benefits .

In both the design and construction of masterplans, buildings and landscape be sensitive to the local environment and its human and other inhabitants in the siting of facilities, their appearance and use of materials, and, during construction, the site management practice.

Keep up to date with the latest environmental, social, economic and technical policies and developments to facilitate the incorporation of innovations that are both state of the art and practical, combining existing and new techniques to match project needs.

Support and advise clients on best environmental, social, economic and technical practice in the briefing, design, procurement, construction, fitting out, occupation, facilities management, building performance and ultimately, re- use, recycling or disposal of buildings and landscape features.

Conduct our own consultancy to accord with sound practice in sustainable development and in accordance of our ISO 14001 certified system.

White Design’s Dartington Primary School in Devon has been named “Forum for the Built Environment Building of the Year” by the Devon and Cornwall FBE Branch. As well as praising the project’s “highly sustainable design, innovative features and quality of build” the judges’ commentary particularly noted “the end user’s obvious delight and pride in the building”. The Forum for the Built Environment is the premier business generation and networking organisation for the property and construction industries. Established in 1946, the organisation was formerly known as the Faculty of Building.

Our way of working

“Work hard and have fun” describes our style of working at White Design. The practice has grown organically since 1998 and we are now a team of 30. As the practice has expanded, we have been determined to keep our “small practice feel”, so we researched and introduced a unique, internal structure which we call “communities”.

White Design communities act like small family units within the wider team, bringing together colleagues across professional disciplines, career stages and work patterns. Rather than splitting the team into project or sector-based work groups, we designed communities to provide a focus for well-being and communication in the work environment. Communities support individual and professional development needs with the help of dedicated CPD, IT, Research and Knowledge co-ordinators. Each community has its own identity and its own name, with a programme of social events organised by a “Life@White Design” co-ordinator.

The whole team takes a day away from the office at least once a year to explore specific themes and contribute ideas to our business plan. In 2008, to mark the practice's 10th birthday, we combined our “Away Day” with a study tour to Snowdonia, visiting the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth and staying atPortmeirion. Our most recent Away Day combined discussions on future strategy with a bear and pie tasting session!

White Design's research service has emerged in two ways: firstly we aim to continuously inform our design and consultancy skills by developing a greater understanding of our field; and secondly we are committed to answering more fully our clients' questions about the way our buildings work and how we might aspire to continuously improve their performance. Increasingly, research has become a service we can offer in its own right in order to contribute to the development of thought and knowledge at an industry-wide level, through government and private sector-funded programmes.

We are developing expertise in analysing the carbon footprints of our buildings, component by component, both as a tool for informing clients and building users about construction and its environmental impact, and as a way to 'practise what we preach’ in delivering low embodied energy buildings.

In 2009 White Design was one of three practices to be awarded a research commission by TRADA (Timber Research and Development Association) through its 75th anniversary competition. We will be exploring the thermal mass properties of solid timber construction in an ambitious project bringing together experts in microbiology, design and thermal modelling.

White Design is also part of the team contributing to an innovative research programme at the University of Bath's BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials . We have helped to design and build a two storey BaleHaus™ on the university campus, using ModCell™ prefabricated straw bale cladding panels. The research team will be assessing straw bales and hemp as building materials to establish how they could be used more widely for in the housing sector.

White Design has worked collaboratively with several academic institutions and in particular with the University of the West of England, where a Research Fellow worked collaboratively with the University over a 12 month period in 2009-2010 to help interpret and document White Design's approach to sustainable design. The project enabled us to build on knowledge within the practice, as well as helping to disseminate innovation and learning to a wider audience.

How to find us

Bus, train and taxi
To get to White Design from Bristol city centre, take the number 5 or 25 bus from Quay Street. Ask the driver for Sussex Place and you will be dropped off just outside The Proving House, at the Better Food Company supermarket and cafe.

There is no direct bus service from Bristol Temple Meads or Parkway railway station to our ofice. A taxi ride will take 10 minutes from Temple Meads or 20 minutes from Parkway. Taxis are available outside both stations. Walking is an option from Temple Meads and we suggest you allow 35 minutes.

Driving and parking
Please use the Google directions above to find us. There is a car park next to the Scrapstore and parking is available in the surrounding streets.

Finding our office in The Proving House
