A very short shortlist for Leicestershire school...

John Ferneley College at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, is one of three buildings shortlisted for the “Building of the Year” category in the 2010 ProCon (Property and Construction) Awards scheme.

The winner will be announced on 11 November in a ceremony at the Walkers Stadium, Leicester. Completed in April 2010 for client Leicestershire County Council with Willmott Dixon Construction and Integral Engineering Design, the £15.5m college provides places for 800 secondary school students on a 14.4 acre site.

Early consultation with stakeholders established that the teachers, pupils and governers wanted to avoid an institutionalised feel in their new school. So White Design and Integral Engineering Design worked closely together to come up with a solution that maximises the advantages of natural light, with stack and cross ventilation controlled by a Building Management System, which the occupants can override if they choose to. The design also incorporates occupancy sensing for lighting control as well as zoning for heating and lighting to allow out-of-hours community use.

Extensive thermal and daylight modelling was carried out in the early design stages to optimise the location, orientation and height of the structure and associated car park and play areas. The building occupies a single storey on the southern side with no internal level changes and a double storey to the north consisting of three accommodation stairs and two lifts which facilitate the same user experience of the building for everyone.

Double celebration for Dartington Primary School ...

The pupils, staff and design team of Dartington Primary School have two causes for celebration this week. Completed by White Design in February, the school has just been awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating. The second piece of good news comes from the LABC Awards (Local Authority Building Control), where the school has now been shortlisted as one of 11 finalists for the best education project in the UK, having already won the South West regional award. The winner will be announced on 2 November 2010.

Speaking in ‘Building Design Reviews’ on 23 July, project architect Andrew Docherty praised the client, Devon County Council, for their far-sightedness in holding on to their ideals for a truly sustainable building:
“In terms of materials and construction, Dartington must be one of the greenest schools in the UK. It was very brave of the local authority to go with it and not settle for a more conventional building.”

White Design’s “infectious enthusiasm”

We recently welcomed our third work experience student this year, Enla Fees from Warwickshire, who spent a week at the practice in July. Enla has applied to study architecture at Sheffield Hallam University and was keen to see at first hand how an interdisciplinary practice operates.

Reflecting on her time with us Enla explained:
“The high level of enthusiasm and passion within the practice is truly infectious. I cannot begin to convey the importance of having such an informative experience before finalising the decision to dedicate the next stage of my education to architecture... Altogether an inspiring week!”

Carlotta Baumhoffner and Daniel Given had a similarly positive experience earlier in the year, with a tailored schedule of site visits, in-house meetings, drawing package introduction and project briefings.

Please note our work placement programme for 2010 is now closed and we unable to offer further placements this year. Please check our website page “Life@whitedesign” early in 2011 for news of next year’s programme.

White Design helps inspire the next generation

At White Design we enjoy supporting young people who want to find out about a career in design and construction. This might be in the form of a work experience placement in our Bristol office, a careers talk at a local school, or through the interactive websites attached to each of our primary school commissions as they are being built. One of the formal ways we contribute to education is through the Ablaze and STEM programmes, both designed to raise the aspirations and skill levels of local young people.

Two designers from White Design - Anna Whitworth, a landscape architect and Jonny Marrion, who is studying for his part 2 professional qualification in architecture - were identified as “inspirational role models” and recently volunteered to lead projects and careers discussions at two Bristol schools.

Anna visited Oldbury Court Primary School in Downend and spoke to a class of 32 children, aged 10 to 11, while Jonny joined older students at the Grange School in Kingswood to help them design an Ecohome and garden.

Summing up their experiences, both Jonny and Anna agreed:
“What surprised us was how much the children already knew about the issues facing our planet today which is very promising. Everyone involved agreed it was a brilliant day and much fun was had by all”.

See www.ablazebristol.org.uk. and See www.stemnet.org.uk for more information about the Ablaze and STEM educational programmes.

STEMnet stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics network, an organisation set up to increase young people’s awareness of the advantages and opportunities of studying and following careers in this field.

Ablaze is a joint venture between Bristol City Council and over 100 Bristol businesses, which currently supports over 5000 local young people.

Straw house passes hurricane test

White Design is part of the team which helped design and build "BaleHaus@Bath", a two-storey, straw-bale house as part of a research project on the University of Bath campus.

Since October 2009 the building has been monitored for thermal performance and humidity levels - but the most dramatic moment of the programme so far was the recent test for wind resistance. During the experiment, hydraulic jacks pushed against the walls with an impact of more than four tonnes, equivalent to the dynamic force of a hurricane.

Finlay White, Marketing and Operations Director of ModCell said: “This is a fantastic result. All too often, we are asked whether building with straw is durable - perhaps the technology is linked in people’s minds with the fairy story of the 3 pigs and the straw house blown down by the big bad wolf! I think the research at Bath University turns that story on its head! Building with straw using the ModCell System is undoubtedly safe, secure and durable. It’s a material that will help us meet the 21st century challenge of reducing our CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050.”

This is the first time a whole house made of straw bales has been tested in this way. The researchers will now use this data to develop a theoretical computer model of the house to

Sustainable suburbs and how to live in them

White Design is part of a UK-wide research project exploring how suburban neighbourhoods can adapt to climate change. The suburbs of three cities - Bristol, Oxford and Stockport - will be monitored in a 3 year project led by the Centre for Sustainable Planning and Environments at the University of the West of England. Suburbs are being targeted because they are the most common type of urban area in the UK, housing 84% of the population.

White Design's role will be to provide specialist input on the built environment, particularly retrofitting and behavioural change under different scenarios and climate change adaptation packages.

The project team will use modelling tools covering climate change, house prices and adaptation outcomes to help participants visualise what 'adapted' neighbourhoods will look like.

The project title (SNACC) stands for Suburban Neighbourhood Adaptation for a Changing Climate and is part of a wider government programme to manage and protect vital ecosystem services. The findings will be communicated to a wide network of policy, practice, public and academic audiences.

Leicestershire project set to become "national benchmark"

Students in Melton Mowbray returned from the Easter holiday to start the term in their new school building. The ‘handover’ took place on 12 April for the 800-place John Ferneley secondary school commissioned by Leicestershire County Council and designed by White Design with Willmott Dixon Construction.

The building achieved its target of a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ certificate and received an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of ‘B’ for the ‘as built’ stage. White Design will be working with the school as they become familiar with the sustainable technologies and building management system to help them achieve a similarly impressive ‘in use’ EPC score in the first years of the building’s operation.

John Humphries, Construction Manager at Leicestershire County Council’s Property Services said White Design had achieved “an excellent result”.

“Without doubt the scheme will become a national benchmark in Education design and more importantly will provide stimulus to all who work within it. “Iconic” status can sometimes drive architects to solutions that are inappropriate and self indulgent; but at ‘JF’ I believe you have delivered a 'classy subtlety' which is evident both externally and internally.”

White Design’s “exceptional landmark” for Merthyr

On 26 March 2010 White Design handed over Ynysowen Community Primary School, a £4.9m project commissioned by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council in Aberfan, South Wales. When they return from their Easter holidays, 340 children will move into the new school, which combines two existing primary schools and a nursery.

Working with contractors Morgan Ashurst, the scheme began on site on St David’s Day, 1 March 2009, with the building taking just over a year to complete. Environmental features include ground source heat pumps, a rainwater harvesting system, solar hot water, natural daylighting and ventilation, and FSC timber throughout. Each of the classrooms has a winter garden with underfloor heating which provides additional break-out space throughout the year.

Joyce Crandon, Education Business Manager at Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, said:

“White Design has produced an innovative school design which is environmentally and aesthetically pleasing, enabling the Authority to take forward its commitment to promote sustainability and energy saving options in new schools..... It is a real flagship for the Authority. White Design's principles for sustainable design and construction have produced a building that seems totally at one with its surroundings; we could only provide the valley but you have managed to fill it with a non-intrusive yet exceptional landmark!”

Retrofit for the Future competition success

A team headed by White Design is one of 87 projects across the UK selected to test low carbon building technologies in the second stage of the Technology Strategy Board’s Retrofit for the Future programme. Science Minister Lord Drayson and Housing Minister John Healey announced the winners on 25 February as part of the government’s £17 million investment in new solutions to make the UK’s current housing stock more energy efficient.

In the initial design phase, over 190 organisations - including housing associations, architects and construction companies - received up to £20,000 each to carry out full feasibility studies and devise innovative proposals. The 87 second-stage winners have now been awarded development contracts to carry out retrofits on existing homes.

White Design drew together a retrofit team with a wide range of skills and experience to enter the competition, including Forum for the Future, Sustain, Sustrans, ROK and Arup. Working closely with our housing association partner, SHHA, a Bristol based social housing provider specialising in supported housing, we selected a traditionally constructed, “2-up 2-down” Victorian terraced property for our project. Our scheme aims to investigate how we can incorporate simple, robust, yet effective sustainable technologies which will encourage residents to engage with low carbon lifestyles.

White Design in Sustain magazine's Top 10

Two White Design projects have been named by Professor Tom Woolley in his list of the ten best natural building projects in the UK, in the January 2010 issue of Sustain magazine (Volume 10, issue 06).

Professor Woolley, an architect, envoronmental researcher and author of The Green Building Handbook, selected the Balehaus at Bath University as the most innovative example of low-impact construction methods. The Balehaus is designed by White Design as part of a Technology Strategy Board funded research project to develop prefabricated strawbale housing for the mainstream housing market.

Also making it into Professor Woolley's top 10 is White Design's new £6M home for Dartington CE Primary School in Devon. Building on the strong environmental ethos shared by client Devon County Council, we specified timber for 90% of the building fabric, using mostly locally-sourced Sweet Chestnut which will weather naturally with time.

Gower Design Guide role for White Design

White Design’s consultancy team is to co-author a Design Guide for Gower in a project supported by Swansea City Council, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Countryside Council for Wales. Chosen for its classic coastline and outstanding natural environment, Gower was the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to be designated in 1956.

Working in partnership with town planning consultancy Nathaniel Lichfield, we will be providing guidance on the architecture, sustainability and landscape elements of the document, beginning with a full ‘character assessment’ of both the built environment and the rural landscape. The Design Guide, due for publication in December 2010, is expected to underpin development and inform planning application procedures across Gower.

BaleHaus research project

White Design has helped design and build "Balehaus@Bath", a two-storey, straw-bale house as part of a research project on the University of Bath campus. We are part of the team contributing to an innovative research programme at the university's BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials. BaleHaus™ is an entirely renewable way to construct homes, usingModCellTM prefabricated straw bale cladding panels.

The BaleHhausTM has been fitted with the latest testing technologies to monitor all aspects of the building's performance over 12 months. Air tightness, relative humidity, acoustics and thermal performance will be key aspects of the investigation.

The research team will be assessing straw bales and hemp as building materials to establish how they could be used more widely for housing, helping the UK achieve its targets for reducing carbon emissions. Due to the high insulating properties of straw, houses made of straw bales need almost no conventional heating, keeping running costs low and minimising environmental impact.

The ModCellTM panels on the first floor of the building are being recycled from a previous project. They are the same panels used by Kevin McCloud in the experimental 'House That Kevin Built' at Grand Designs Live in 2008. We are delighted that they have found a new home at the University of Bath.

But the story won't end at the close of the research project ..... we have designed the building so that it can be be dismantled and relocated to another site.
