Double RIBA success for White Design Projects

Posted on December 5, 2011

White Design is pleased to have been part of the team supporting UWE’s Faculty of Technology and Environment which won the RIBA Town and Country Design Award, Public Sector category.  Originally designers of Phase One of the project in 2002, which won BIAT and RSA awards for its innovation, White Design’s involvement has continued through its sister company, ModCell.  ModCell played an important part in the UWE scheme’s sustainable materials strategy.  ModCell panels manufactured locally out of timber, straw and lime render demonstrate to the students a modern method of construction that respects the environment.

White Design is also pleased to have played a role in the success of Bideford College’s RIBA Award for the South West and Wessex 2011.

Bideford College was one of WD’s partner schools under the Department for Education Project Faraday initiative.

The DfE project was designed to address the fact that, in many instances, there has not been widespread  change to the design of science laboratories since the days of Faraday in the late 19th Century. Teaching and learning facilities now need to reflect a more interactive, project-based and ICT-enabled approach to create more inspiring science accommodation and encourage more students to choose science as a career. White Design led one of DFE's Project Faraday consortia, whose outputs continue to guide and support the building of new exemplar school science accommodation.

At Bideford College, the Project Faraday proposals were worked up in collaboration with students, staff and the existing design team. White Design’s Project Faraday proposals helped the school secure additional government funding to realise the science facilities in line with the Faraday recommendations.
