The LILAC project was officially started on site yesterday afternoon with the traditional groundbreaking, or sod cutting, ceremony. Even the very youngest members of the LILAC Co-op were involved in breaking the ground in order to mark the official start of construciton for the co-operative housing development.
Watch ITVs report and video of the ceremony here.
LILAC stands for ‘low impact living affordable community’ - a new ‘eco-village’ of 20 new homes designed by White Design on the site of a disused primary school in Bramley, Leeds.
Residents will help to build their own homes using ModCell straw and timber cladding panels.
Shared facilities in a specially-designed ‘common house’ and a safe ‘home zone’ with restricted parking will further enhance the strong sense of community.
