The “House from the Garden” project was an unusual experience for the Polish studio KWK PROMES. The owner had a finished garden project, which was in an advanced stage of implementation. And the only thing missing was a house. What at first seemed like a ridiculous reversal of events, after it was explained, made perfect sense to us. He wanted to be able to enjoy the garden to the fullest once the construction and occupancy were complete. Plants take much longer to reach the desired size than it does to build even a house that big. After all, you can plant large trees, but it’s expensive and not environmentally friendly.

A nature lover turned the idle land into a beautiful green oasis with a lake and a smooth road to where the house, also considered an art gallery, was supposed to be located. The curves along which it liked to move inspired the architects. The first floor of the house, with its daytime section, is an extension of those curves and blends gently into its surroundings. This impression is complemented by the gray concrete used on the facades, which references the color of the existing stone road that is the starting point of the project. The circular shape clearly separates the driveway from the rest of the garden, providing residents with privacy and quiet.

The first floor contrasts with the white minimalist enclosure. Two different geometries collide with each other and a soft atrium is the link between both floors. The garden surrounding the house on almost all sides flows into its interior through a semi-atrium at first floor level. The authors had minimal influence on the garden, so they treated it as a natural element that cannot be chosen. Hence the name of the design. Another important aspect was the investor’s desire to display their rich art collection. Therefore, additional large spaces were created on the first and second floors exclusively for art exhibitions. The owner could organize a vernissage for a large number of people. Moreover, the designers placed the most important functions of the house in close proximity to each other to make it user-friendly.

The large shutters on the south and west facades are not only of formal importance – they are finished in the same plaster as the walls – but they also enclose the building in a unified form and, above all, protect the valuable art collections from harmful sunlight. The task of improving the quality of the surrounding space is unconventional and surprising. Because of the chaos of the buildings and the lack of vegetation, he re-greens vast areas of unoccupied land around him. He creates gardens, followed by the construction of houses of various sizes. Architects have supported him in creating green urban planning and providing a friendly, sustainable living space with lots of free greenery that improves urban air quality. The entire housing estate, like his house, uses alternative energy sources.
